Is this the reason he died though? (Now that I think about it I'm not so sure) Did he die because he didn't decide but rather than choose the right side? That makes more sense if that is the reason he died. This situation can easily be applied to present day. People like to win. If someone is on a losing team, they will try everything they can to switch over to the winning team. Another example is betting on a sports game. People bet and if their team is losing they want to switch. I think it's interesting to see time and time again that these things are still going on today.

Is it fair?
We learned last week in class that Haran had to decide between Avraham and Nimrod. Is it Harans fault if he was brought up learning that idols were the way to go? I don't think it should be. Unfortunately it is though, but this still troubles me. I think (strongly) that Haran should not be punished for something that he does not know about. Now yes he did probably have some idea that Avraham was the right decision, but non the less he still died. This topic is just so troubling! I know G-d cannot give unlimited chances, but to punish an uneducated person?

I disagree.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with the first part, but I agree with the second part. I think that it's very true that people always want to be on the winning side. Especially when their life is on the line like it was with Haran. He had to either choose to support Avraham and be killed by Nimrod, or he had to support Nimrod and take the chance that HaShem might be strong enough to kill him. I agree though, that Haran was probably punished because of his reluctance to choose- not the fact that he worshiped idols. He should have trusted completely in HaShem and gone without a question or doubt in his mind to support Avraham, but instead he wasn't sure if HaShem would save Avraham, and so he decided to wait to see what happened to Avraham before he chose who to support.
ReplyDeleteI think that Haran was unsure, like many people are today. There are certain people who are just "looking for the right thing" and go around learning about different religions and philosophies. I think that many people who convert to judaism were not always 100 percent sure that the always believed in G-d and mitzvot- they had to learn and understand first. I think that is in a sense like what Haran was doing- he might have been a devout follower of Judaism. Some people just need a little help and time to get there.
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think that people can never truly be sure they are going to win, but when they see a person winning, they believe that they would have a better chance on that side.
